logging with horses
Meet "Dick," one of the horses John uses to pull logs.
The fact that John uses horses to extract timber from a forest is not what makes his method more environmentally sound. He also occasionally bunches logs to one point using a small tractor, and then transports his logs long distance using his tractor forwarder, as seen on the left. What makes his operation sound is the reverence he holds for the forests he cares for. John repeatedly tells us that there are good logging jobs done with log skidders, trucks and tractors, just as there are bad logging jobs done with horses. The difference is in the person doing the job, not the equipment.

For more information, take a pictorial tour through the process with John, or, if you'd like, take a look at some of the photos John has taken in his forest, of the various residents and visitors.
