After cutting down the trees he has selected, John picks them over, looking for wood suitable for drying. Even trees such as those at right, which are rotting inside, can be salvaged. John butts these trees (cuts off sections of the bottom) until he reaches solid wood that he finds suitable, and leaves the remains to biodegrade. The good stuff, John brings back to his mill for processing and drying. On the bottom left, we see the "Big Man," himself (all 6'5" of him!) beside some of his logs.
